Pieces of Peace Art Therapy - 2014
Akron General Medical Center McDowell Cancer Center Institute started an art therapy program for current patients receiving treatment, their family members, and survivors in April 2013. This wonderful program uses art therapy to decrease pain and anxiety, as well as allow these individuals to express their feelings through art. Every year, patients and family members are invited to participate in a free group art therapy project sponsored by the Stephen A. Comunale, Jr. Family Cancer Foundation. In 2014, the project was titled Pieces of Peace and patients and their families were asked to decorate a square of the project to represent what brings them peace through their cancer journey. The 239 participants used felt buttons, gems, and patterened scrapbook material to complete the art which is now on display in the Cancer Center Lobby.
